When the bar opened in 1968, it was one of many gay bars in the neighborhood, and one of quite a few piano bars in in the city. But it represented something vital about Silver Lake-an older Silver Lake that was seeping away just as I arrived. It closed down about a month after I moved to LA, and I only went there once. The Other Side was not my bar in any way. It also had, in its people, a thread of old-school bohemia that made me feel instantly at home. In fact, it felt positively leafy set amid a city that seemed starkly un-green to me-especially coming from Atlanta, a city in a forest. ![]() It wasn’t too flashy there were hills and it lacked the desolate stretch that characterizes much of LA on first look. Later in the day, after visiting the West Side and the Valley and a blur of other neighborhoods, we drove under the 101 Freeway and into Silver Lake. “All the schools look like Soviet-era prisons,” I said, thinking of my son who would need to attend elementary school somewhere in this sprawling city. Halfway through, I called my husband in tears. ![]() During that interview, a company manager took me on an expedition to visit neighborhoods where my family and I might settle. Apart from passing through the overwhelming, smog-filled circular behemoth of LAX, I had never visited Los Angeles prior to the two-day job interview that led me to live in the city for over five years. ![]() ![]() Campion's direction is dangerously erotic, while Benedict Cumberbatch gives one of his all-time great performances as a man so uncomfortable in his own skin he inflicts his pain upon others. He is similarly inclined to do that to her son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who arrives at the ranch on summer holiday from college studies, but instead decides to take him under his wing, figuring he can mold him into the kind of man he thinks is worth being. He worships a rider named Bronco Henry and calls his softer brother George (Jesse Plemons) "fatso." When George marries a widowed innkeeper (Kirsten Dunst), Phil makes it his mission to mentally torture her. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Phil Burbank, a rancher who prides himself on the dirt under his fingernails and his ability to live with as few amenities as possible. The Piano director Jane Campion's return to feature filmmaking after more than a decade away is an absolute triumph, a chilling exploration of a man driven to cruelty by the pursuit of a masculine ideal in the American West. ![]() ![]() So it’s no shock to imagine how important the gay beaches are to the LGBT community. SoCal is beach culture, it’s ingrained in the way people who live there think, the way they plan their days even. Many of these moments were burned into our memory at Black’s Beach, and it made me think about how many other life changing moments I’ve had at other beaches. We went on many adventures in the short time we were together, and I’ll never forget the moments that we shared. Though my time with this boy reaffirmed my belief that every moment can be beautiful, and you should never stop letting your breath be taken away by the world around you. Our tryst ended as heavily and passionately as it began, and I shortly made my way to Key West to start my new adventures here. While I was there, I saw San Diego’s incredible Pride Parade for the first time ever, had loads of fun partying in the San Diego Zoo late at night, was able to see Kesha perform at Balboa Park, and most importantly I was swept up into an intense and passionate romance with a boy which led to me changing my plans and calling SoCal home for a few months. This past summer, while I was taking time to travel and visit friends all across the country, I ended up in San Diego for Pride weekend. ![]() “This is not the Jersey shore,” Shangela agrees. “I think I am closer to Manhattan than some parts of Brooklyn, time-wise,” he observes, “but it really feels like I’m in Idaho.” We assume that these folks are not regular viewers of RuPaul’s Drag Race.īob the Drag Queen surveys the scene. ![]() It’s all suspicious squints and zero recognition. ![]() Into this scene strut Shangela, Bob the Drag Queen and Eureka O’Hara in eye-popping plumes of glitter and confidence. Season 3, Episode 4 of the HBO series We’re Here opens on a sun-beaten field crammed with pickup trucks. Seattle gay rights activist David Neth takes the lead organizing Seattle’s first Pride Week. And though there’s plenty of work left to do, our city’s made some serious progress in the last half-century. Our city’s Pride March has come a long way, from a small group of pioneers to a massive parade that draws in thousands of people. Although Seattle’s first Pride celebration was small, it was early, happening four years after inaugural Pride marches in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. ![]() ![]() Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, among others, led the Stonewall riots in New York City and helped spark the fight for LGBTQ+ equality. ![]() Seattle celebrated our very first Pride Week in 1974 - five years after trans and gay rights activists Marsha P. ![]() The staff and vast majority of the dancers are friendly. I'm happy to say they have really improved over time. When Silverado moved to this newest location, it was rather disappointing at first. If you care about our community, this is not a place you want to provide business to. ![]() The rest of the reviews speak to similar experiences. In a time where many of us are trying to find safe and accepting locations to enjoy a night out, it was shocking to hear those words and assumptions in a bar that's plastered with acceptance mission statements. The bartender requested that we do not cheers or scream if we were going to take shots, to which we said "Ok" but we didn't realize we were "screaming" their word for word response was "straight girls come in here all the time screeching" please keep in mind a good majority of our group was queer women. After our first round of drinks and giving a cheers for the birthday girl our group went up to the bar to order a round of shots (many and all on one tab) before our next destination. I have never written a negative review for an establishment because it takes a lot for me to feel that disappointed, but this place is an embarrassment to our community. |
